CREW RESOURCE MANAGEMENT

Crew Resource Management (CRM) is the application of human factors to multi-person flight crews and their interaction during flight operations, including communication, situational awareness, problem solving, aeronautical decision making, and coordinated teamwork. CRM may be defined as the effective utilization of all available human, informational, and equipment resources toward the effective performance of safe and efficient flight operations. CRM training encompasses crew coordination training, interactive group discussions and debriefings, and measurement and improvement of crew performance.

The application of CRM can be viewed as an active process by which flight crew identify significant safety-of-flight risks and simultaneously develop, communicate and execute a coordinated plan to eliminate or mitigate those flight risks. The primary focus of CRM is on communication within the aircraft among flight crew members and outside resources such as ATC, in-flight weather advisories, maintenance, operations, dispatch, etc. Communication is the critical factor in crew management because it is the means by which management is carried out.

The primary goal of this three day initial CRM course is accurate, effective aeronautical decision making. The course focuses on the twelve deadly mistakes of ineffective crew coordination and countermeasures. NTSB analysis of CRM related accidents is used as a modality to reinforce crew coordination lessons learned.
